Organic Bentonite BT-184 for Grease Applications
Grease is a semi-solid or solid lubricant generally composed of base oil, a thickener, and various additives. The thickener forms a structured system within the base oil and gives the grease its characteristic consistency.
Organic bentonite BT-184 can be used as an organoclay thickener in lubricating grease. It is convenient to process and can be incorporated into grease formulations using a relatively simple production procedure. Proper dispersion and activation are important to achieve the desired thickening effect.
Polar Activators for BT-184
When using organic bentonite BT-184 in grease, a suitable polar activator is normally required to promote activation and dispersion of the organoclay.
Common polar activators include:
- Propylene carbonate
- Ethanol/water mixture (95/5)
- Acetone/water mixture (95/5)
The amount of polar activator can be adjusted according to its polarity and the formulation. In general, the required amount may be reduced when a more polar activator is used.
Typical Processing Procedure
The following procedure can be used as a general starting point for grease production with BT-184.
1. Add the first portion of base oil
Add approximately 50% of the total base oil to the reactor. Start agitation and heat the base oil to approximately 60–70°C.
2. Add organic bentonite
While stirring, gradually add BT-184 to the heated base oil. A typical starting addition level is approximately 10–15% of the total formulation, depending on the desired grease consistency and formulation requirements.
Continue mixing for approximately 5–10 minutes to promote initial dispersion.
3. Add the polar activator
Add the selected polar activator while maintaining agitation. A typical starting dosage is approximately 30–40% based on the amount of organic bentonite.
Other additives can be added during this stage according to the formulation requirements.
Continue mixing for approximately 25–30 minutes.
4. Add the remaining base oil
Add the remaining 50% of the base oil to the reactor. Continue mixing for approximately 30 minutes to further develop a uniform grease structure.
5. Homogenize the grease
After the dispersion and reaction process, pass the grease through a three-roll mill or homogenizer. This can improve the uniformity of the organoclay dispersion and help develop a more consistent grease structure.
6. Deaeration, filtration and packaging
After homogenization, remove entrained air from the grease. The material can then be filtered and packaged after the required quality checks.
Improving BT-184 Dispersion Efficiency
Dispersion conditions have an important influence on the performance of organic bentonite in grease.
Increasing the dispersion speed and extending the dispersion time can generally improve the dispersion efficiency of BT-184 and help develop its thickening effect.
However, the optimum processing conditions depend on the base oil, organic bentonite dosage, polar activator, mixing equipment, temperature, and desired grease properties. Laboratory evaluation is recommended to determine the appropriate formulation and processing conditions before scale-up.
Conclusion
Organic bentonite BT-184 provides an organoclay-based thickening option for lubricating grease. A typical process involves partial addition of base oil, dispersion of BT-184, activation with a suitable polar activator, addition of the remaining base oil, followed by homogenization and finishing.
By optimizing the BT-184 dosage, polar activator level, dispersion speed, dispersion time, and processing temperature, manufacturers can develop grease formulations with the desired consistency and structure.
