Professional Guide: Preparation and Formulation of BT Series Organoclay Pre-gels
In the production of paints, inks, and lubricants, the efficiency of organoclay rheological additives depends heavily on the quality of the pre-gel preparation. Using the correct dosage and high-shear dispersion ensures optimal thickening, anti-settling, and thixotropic properties.
This guide outlines the precise formulations and standardized preparation steps for the BT series of organoclays.
BT Series Pre-gel Formulation Table
| Model | Dosage of Dry Powder | Dosage of Solvent | Dosage of Polar Activator |
| BT-184 | 6-10 | Xylene: 88-92Mineral Spirits 200#: 86-90 | Methanol/Water (95/5): 3-5 or Ethanol/Water (95/5): 2-4 |
| BT-185 | 10 | Xylene: 86-87 | Methanol/Water (95/5): 4 or Ethanol/Water (95/5): 3 |
| BT-186,BT-871 | 10 | Xylene: n-Butanol (4:1 mixture) = 86-87 | Methanol/Water (95/5): 4 or Ethanol/Water (95/5): 3 |
| BT-381, BT-383, BT-382, BT-182, BT-384, BT-581, BEZ-300 | 10 | Xylene: 90 | Activator Not Required |
Standardized Preparation Process
To achieve full exfoliation of the organoclay silicate layers, the following addition order and mixing times must be strictly followed:
Step 1: Solvent Preparation
Material: Add the solvent or mixed solvent system (e.g., Xylene or 200# Solvent Oil).
Process: Mix thoroughly.
Step 2: Clay Dispersion
Material: Add the BT Series Organoclay dry powder.
Process: High-speed stirring for 5–10 minutes.
Goal: Ensure the clay particles are fully wetted and pre-dispersed before activation.
Step 3: Polar Activation
Material: Add the designated Polar Activator (if required by the model).
Process: High-speed stirring for 15–20 minutes.
Goal: Chemical activation triggers the formation of a thixotropic gel network.
Important Technical Tips for Best Results
Polar Activator Efficiency: For maximum performance, always use a mixture of Methanol/Water or Ethanol/Water at a 95/5 ratio. The presence of 5% water is essential to bridge the hydrogen bonds between clay platelets, ensuring full gel structure formation.
The Role of High-Shear: Pre-gel preparation is a mechanical process. Using a high-speed disperser is critical to provide the required energy to “exfoliate” or open the clay stacks for maximum thickening efficiency.
Process Optimization: If your system is sensitive to polar solvents, we recommend our Self-activating models (such as BT-381 or BEZ-300). These streamline production by eliminating the need for separate activators and reducing the risk of solvent incompatibility.
